Malaysia Airlines suspends flights to Istanbul

Malaysia Airlines has been cutting their routes extensively and the next destination to receive the axe is Istanbul. Malaysia Airlines will suspend flights to Istanbul effective 26 August 2015.

Travellers booked beyond 26 August 2015 will have to wait for Malaysia Airlines to advice on re-routing or refund procedures.

    Hi,
Istanbul flights will be suspended as well? Why don’t they publish such information officially?? Do you perhaps know until when one is eligible to apply for a refund? Malaysia Airlines already changed one leg I planned (to Brisbane) and obviously another is soon to follow. However, they never provided me with information that I can actually cancel my flight because of these changes, they just sent me new flight schedule.

Hi Teja, yes, Istanbul flights are being suspended as well. The information on the cancellation has been informed to your booking source. If you booked through a travel agent, they would have received the notification from MAS. At the moment there is no mention on the validity of the refund eligibility. MAS usually will only provide the refund as a last option as they would like their customers to keep flying with them.

    Hi Eugene,

Do you know how does the MAS refund procedures work? I bought the MAS ticket for Istanbul – KL flight in September 2015 and there is no alternative arrangement (Turkish Airline is fully booked on that day and the day after) and the re-routing offered by MAS is for Dubai to KL only. My travel agent told me that she received mixed reply from MAS on the refund because the air ticket was purchased at promotional price despite it being MAS’ decision to suspend the route within such a short notice. Thanks.

    Hi CY,

All travellers holding tickets on the affected route will be eligible for a refund or re-routing irrespective of fare paid. If you would like to proceed with a refund, your travel agent will need to submit the refund application to MAS with the reason of route suspension. MAS should not penalise you as it’s due to their route suspension that you are unable to travel. The refund process may take up to 2 months to process.

Thanks for the clarifications. I am just disappointed with the way MAS handles the situation. MAS should have taken the initiative to offer a refund to affected customers where there are no alternative arrangements especially when the travelling date is just 1-2 months away. Instead, each staff gave different responses on the refund eligibility and did not bother to advise on the refund procedures even after two weeks of correspondence. I have expected MAS staff to be more well-prepared to handle the re-routing and/or refund with regards to these suspended routes. Unfortunately, failing to act promptly and professionally (when it matters) gives a bad impression on the company and certainly does not retain customers with MAS.

The Malaysia Airlines Management has decided to concentrate on Business destinations, which is suppose to bring higher revenues. Several leisure destinations including Male, Brisbane and Istanbul have been dropped. We hope that they will re-open these routes in the future.

Hi – i had booked to fly from Istanbul to Kuala Lumpur on 30/12 and was told that the flights were suspended . I was given the alternative route which was fine. But today i was advised that you will recommence flying again. Please confirm if this is correct.
